Vava'u Sightseeing and Land Tours
AS well as a range of popular vacation activities such as sailing, fishing, diving and whalewatching, Vava'u also offers much to the visitor in the way of land tours and sightseeing. The main island of Vava'u is quite a large land mass and is connected by causeways to several adjacent islands. One way to see the island is by taking a Kart Safari tour.
- One way to see the island is by taking a Kart Safari tour. Kart Safaris are located on the waterfront next door to the Aquarium Cafe.
- Hike to the top of Mt Talau only 2 kilometres from the main town of Neiafu. Mt Talau National Park offers visitors spectacular island views from several lookouts on its 131 metre high plateau. It is an energetic but not too difficult hike from the trailhead. Read more information here.
- Interesting land tours are possible with a local Tongan guide. One can hire a scooter and go it alone but it is difficult as there are few signposts! The Fungamatotu Lookout on the east coast offers great views of the waves and up-tilted limestone coastline.
- Visit the 'Ene'io Botanical Garden (near the Fungamatotu Lookout) to see tropical flora, including vanilla, gingers and other exotic plants. Check with your hotel for opening hours and tours.
- There are few good beaches on or connected to the main island (except for 'Utungake - Tongan Beach Resort, Mystic Sands and Luck's Beach Houses). However, one really good beach is the beach at 'Utula'Aina on the north coast. A great beach photo can at 'Utula'Aina Lookout.
- Stroll through Neiafu town, do shopping, visit the market by the wharf or have lunch at one of the many cafes on the waterfront. The main cathedral - St Josephs - is also interesting. It is the large white church midway through town.
There is much to see and do in Vava'u.
