Vava'u Tonga
THE island group of Vava'u is one of the most famous travel destinations in Tonga. Located in the central South Pacific to the south-west of Samoa and east of Fiji, Vava'u is a cluster of beautiful islands, protected bays, harbours and channels.
This makes it particularly attractive to yachts travelling across the South Pacific. South Pacific cruises also call in to Vava'u, mooring in the Port of Refuge just outside of the main town of Neiafu. Passengers are then ferried to the town for shopping and sightseeing.
Accommodation in Vava'u is varied. Close to Neiafu there are hotels, guest houses, lodges, homestays and apartments. There are few beaches on the main island of Vava'u, and the easiest to access is on 'Utungake, where Mystic Sands Beachfront Cottages is situated, a comfortable, boutique accommodation option right on the beach. Mystic Sands is accessible by road as the island is linked to Vava'u Lahi ( the main island ) via a causeway.
There are many beaches on the other smaller islands also; these are accessible by boat transfer, which is organised by the island resorts when you make your accommodation booking. Transfer times vary depending on which island you are staying, but are usually anywhere between 5 minutes and 35 minutes.
Accommodation in Vava'u
International flights to Tonga are possible via Air New Zealand, Air Pacific (Fiji), Pacific Blue (Virgin) and Polynesian Airlines. The flight to Vava'u takes about an hour from Tongatapu, Tonga's main island. Vava'u Airport is located in the north of the main island and regular flights are operated by Chathams Pacific airline. From the airport it is an easy 15 minutes or so by road into Neiafu.
